Aerial photographer and surfing enthusiast Eric Sterman recently posted a video of him successfully towing a surfer into a wave with a drone.
Tow-in surfing has been used in big wave surfing since the mid 1990s. Traditionally, surfers are towed into the wave by a jet ski or a helicopter, but this experiment by Sterman shows drones might have a place in big wave surfing. Granted the waves in the video are small, but the possibility exists considering how fast drones are developing.
While this is not going to be a ‘game changer’ in the drones industry it definitely has a cool factor that can’t be ignored. Even if drone tow-in surfing doesn’t catch on, Sterman has already proved drones are the best way to film surfers catching a wave.
