Joanne Lipman, the Chief Content Officer at Gannett (USA Today and hundreds of local papers), just predicted that 2017 will be the year of the drone for journalism.
Lipman said that many media organizations have been reluctant to jump on the drone bandwagon over the last few years due to safety and legal concerns, among others. But now with Part 107, which created clearer rules for what is needed to legally operate a drone, Lipman sees many news organizations using drones to create better storytelling for their articles.
The New York Times also recently put out a list of five news stories that were brought to life by drones. The list can be found here.
Looks like drones are well on their way to making bigger and bigger waves in the journalism world.
