Microsoft Aims to Save Lives With Drones

Software giant Microsoft is working on using drones to locate mosquito hot spots and breeding grounds to better control the pests from spreading disease and other pathogens.

Microsoft started Project Premonitions in 2015 and in 2016 created its Aerial Information and Robotics (AIR) group. Researchers have long had trouble locating exactly where mosquitoes are breeding and spreading from and Microsoft is offering a solution with intelligent drones that can use machine learning to seek out mosquitoes by themselves and then deploy traps or other counter-measures.

The AIR group is also researching drone swarm technology for tracking other pathogens and for agricultural use.
