Ford Researching the Use of Drones to Guide Self-Driving Cars

Ford Motor Company is looking into the possibility of using drones to guide self driving cars. The idea is that the drone would be launched and controlled by an occupant of the self-driving car. The drone would scan areas beyond the cars built-in sensors and even map areas far ahead of the car, making off-road autonomous ground vehicles possible.

The technology could also be used for human operated vehicles, especially in emergency situations where there is debris and other obstacles. Guiding drones could be used to relay real-time information in a variety of situations that would make traveling safer.

This announcement follows up the revelation earlier this year that Ford had partnered with DJI to look into studying guidance drones for ground-based vehicles.
